About Us

We approach the problem of asthma from every angle possible, as such, we have pulled together a diverse group of leaders in their fields that all have the same goal in common: solving asthma.

Center Directors

Praveen Akuthota, MD
Clinical Director
Praveen Akuthota, MD is Clinical Director of the Center for Asthma Prevention and Treatment and is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Division of Pulmonary at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. He has both an active laboratory where he studies asthma and a clinical practice where he sees patients. His focus on pulmonary disease gives him the opportunity to interact with patients on a weekly basis and collect important data and samples that can be used in the lab. Praveen has received multiple honors and awards for his work in this area, and had dedicated himself to sharing what he has developed with the research community.

Pandurangan Vijayanand, MD PhD
Scientific Director
Pandurangan "Vijay" Vijayanand, M.D. Ph.D. is Scientific Director of the Center for Asthma Prevention and Treatment and is the William K. Bowes Distinguished Professor at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology. While his main focus is fundamental research within the lab, he also maintains clinical operations and sees patients regularly. Vijay has established large funded projects with the National Institutes of Health to study asthma as well as a project to map “normal” human immune cells that will ultimately help us understand epigenetic variations. He is passionate about solving asthma and bringing that solution to the public.

Global

Multi-Disciplinary

Our world is more interconnected than ever before, and so too should be our approach to solving asthma. We encourage asthma experts from all over the world to come together and leverage the resources and discoveries we have made, and at the same time, share with us those insights that might take our own work to the next level.
It is not going to be one scientist doing experiments, or one clinician seeing patients, or one bioinformatician crunching data that solves asthma, it will be a combination of experts that all work together with that common goal. We believe that anyone with the dedication and focus for asthma can contribute to the sum of all our efforts.

Open Data Commitment

All of the work that we do is funded by taxpayers, foundations, and private philanthropists. As such, we take great responsibility in our commitment to making all of the data we generate publicly available through our Asthma Data Portal, as well as in journal publications and giving talks around the world. We believe the open data guidelines set by the NIH are vital to the community and we strive to go above and beyond those requirements by taking it upon ourselves to actively promote the data we have generated and to provide the infrastructure to make accessing it as simple as possible for anyone that would like to use it.
